Street furniture refers to the collection of equipment and objects installed along roads and streets for different purposes. They do a great deal of work making life easy in the streets. When you walk for long hours in the middle of the town, you can certainly use a comfortable bench in a cool park to get some rest. Elsewhere, a public telephone booth will come in handy when you need to make an urgent call. Proper installation of street furniture is the secret to making them functional and convenient for use. If you have been contracted to install street furniture for the first time, here are some of the general guidelines for their placement, distribution and use:

Placement by Function

Before you commence work, assess the type of furniture that you want to install and classify them by the function that they serve. Furniture with related functions should be grouped together during the installation process. For instance, garbage bins should be installed near seats and tables in picnic parks. In this way, people can dispose of dirt without necessarily walking far from where they are seated. On the same note, you should avoid the placement of furniture with contradictory functions close to each other. For example, a seat should not be placed right to next to an Automated Teller Machine (ATM). It makes things easy for burglars with ill motives.

The Fixing Methods

Note that the uses of the space available on streets and public parks might change over time. For example, a picnic park in the middle of the city might be the only available space for a much-needed health centre a few years to come. Therefore, the fixing method used to install the furniture should allow easy removal. Bolt down fixing methods are the most preferable so that you can easily unscrew them from their particular location. However, take note of areas where street furniture is prone to theft and vandalism. Tamper proof fittings with non-corrosive coatings should be used in such cases to prevent theft and secure public property.

Locating the Furniture

Obviously, it is important to create a good impression on your first contract so that your client will not look any further when they have another job. The fine and small details will be the selling point of your work. For example, seats should be conveniently located near paths or overlooking beautiful scenery in a park. Additionally, garbage bins should be readily accessible by garbage collection trucks without interfering with the activities of those in the park.
