Soccer has been the most popular sport in the world for decades, and one of the secrets of its enduring popularity is how little equipment is required to play it. However, if you're after a target a little more sophisticated than the space between two piles of shirts, a portable soccer goal can be a great way to take your favourite sport on the road.

However, there are an enormous variety of portable soccer goals available for purchase, and while many are made from traditional metal an increasing number of portable goals have posts manufactured from durable PVC plastic. These materials each come with their own distinct advantages and disadvantages, so deciding which is right for your goalposts before you buy should mean more headers and less headaches in your future.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a portable PVC goal?

Portable PVC goals tend to be much cheaper than their metal counterparts, but this doesn't mean sacrificing utility. PVC plastics combine strength and durability with light weight, and a portable PVC goal is often light enough to be carried one-handed once disassembled. This makes PVC goals the last word in portability, and a PVC goal is ideal for taking your game on the road for games at the beach or park.

PVC's durability also ensures that PVC soccer goals are very low maintenance. With no rust or rotting to worry about, they can be left outside for extended periods even in inclement weather, and can even be safely disassembled and stored while still damp. A simple wipe down with a cloth and a mild cleaning solution is all that is required to keep them looking new.

Unfortunately, the light weight of PVC soccer goals can be a curse as well as a blessing, and particularly powerful strikes can cause PVC goals to shift if not firmly secured to the ground. PVC is also relatively vulnerable to intense sunlight, and PVC goals should be covered during the summer to prevent them becoming brittle and fragile due to UV exposure.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a portable metal goal?

If you're after a portable goal capable of taking a serious beating, metal is the way to go. Portable metal goals are capable of weathering an enormous beating from both the elements and errant strikes of the ball, and can be stowed away for long journeys with confidence. Because of their extra weight they will not shift when hit by fast balls, even if you choose a simple two-post model without a stabilising crossbar at the rear of the goal.

However, metal portable goals can have problems with rust and corrosion if they are neglected, and even weatherproofed models will lose their protective coatings over time. To get around this problem, many players choose portable goals made from rust-proof aluminium, but these goals are considerable more expensive than both PVC and steel portable goals.
